Study of Berthe Morisot with a Bouquet of Violets by Edouard Manet, 1872

Berthe Morisot was not only a favorite model and the sister-in-law
of Edouard Manet, but she was one of the artists in the first
impressionist show of 1874 in Paris. Her work hung along side
Cezanne, Degas, Monet, Pissarro, Sisley and others.
She and her sister were taught by Corot. And, she was related
Jean-Honore Fragonard. What an amazing time it must have
been to be an artist.

The original painting is about 22” x 15” so this detail might be
about 7” x 10” compared to my 5” x 7”. My goal in painting
this was to learn more about painting people. I did my best
to keep the brush strokes as loose as I could and I was
generally successful at that. Working from photos online
I tried to stay as accurate as possible with the colors.

I felt like all went smoothly. I was basically done when I
decided to touch up the mouth. Suddenly she looked
20 years older. Is a slight thinning of the lips all it takes
to age a person that much? The change did not work.
It took me an hour of study before I was ready to start
painting again. Usually I know just when to stop so I don’t
overwork my paintings, but I had no control of myself here.
In the end, though it’s not perfect, I was happy
with the way this study came out.

TEXTING NUDE

AFTER AUGUST MACKE, 1911
'SITTING NUDE WITH CUSHIONS'

ACRYLIC ON WOOD PANEL - 5" X 7" - ©Bruce Docker, 2010
SOLD
My source for this is an internet photo. I followed Macke's drawing
all the way, but I have serious doubts about the colors. Every photo I saw
seemed washed out compared to his other work. I brightened
it up quite a bit and used just a few colors.
Red, blue, yellow,
black, white and a touch of brown.

SLEEPING RIVER NYMPH

NUDE FIGURE

Acrylic on wood panel - 5" x 7" - (C)BruceDocker,2010

$100.00

I picked the title for this painting before I painted
her. Now that the painting is finished I'm not so sure
the title is appropriate. There is a certain solidity, edge and
voluptuousness to her that isn't nymph-like at all. This
painting is from the same life drawing as Red Nude. The drawing
itself is old, but I have always liked the looseness of it.
Let me know what you think.

JUDITH BEHEADING HOLOFERNES

Acrylic on wood - 7" x 5" - (C)BruceDocker,2008
$100.00

This is a detail from the spectacular and gruesome "Judith beheading Holofernes" by Caravaggio. His painting is filled with emotion and terror. With this detail I am focusing just on Holofernes and that moment when the last of his life is slipping away as depicted by Caravaggio. Virtue overcoming evil. The original is from 1599 and amazingly, it is from early in his career.

STRANGE PEOPLE after EMIL NOLDE

Acrylic on canvas - 28x36" (C)BruceDocker2009

This is a painting I completed in 1978. At that time I painted several large paintings for a show in Topeka, KS. Unfortunately, I have no records of that show and this is the only large painting that I still have from that time. I don't recall if the others still still exist or where they are!? I do remember one was of Captain Ahab and was about 48x36".
